REYN Bulgaria

Sevda is 28 years old and is a successful Roma woman. She has been working as a nurse in a hospital in Sofia for four years and is part of the “Together – Healthy Baby, Healthy Future” program of the Trust for Social Alternative Foundation. Since last year she is also a happy mother.

Below we will look in detail at Sevda’s personal and professional development. We will look at the events that have shaped her character, as well as the human factors that have helped her overcome all the challenges along the way in her development as a nurse.

At the age of 22, Sevda graduated from the Medical University of Sofia and obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.

Sevda has a sister and a brother who are younger than her. Sevda’s sister is studying to become a medical laboratory technician and her brother is studying to become a national security and defence technician. Sevda’s mother has completed primary education and works in a military equipment company in Kazanlak, while her father works as a builder and has also completed primary education. Sevda is the first person in her family to successfully complete university.

While studying, Sevda applied and was approved for a scholarship from the Roma Education Fund. The scholarship also relieved her family, and at the same time, Sevda was able to achieve her big dream of becoming a nurse. During her school years, Sevda also participated in summer leadership camps organized by Roma Education Fund. During her studies at the university, Sevda also volunteered in the largest Roma neighborhood in Sofia – “The Faculty”, where she managed to organize a number of volunteer initiatives and activities for the benefit of the local community.

Sevda completed her secondary education at a vocational high school in Kazanlak, where she was the only Roma student in her class. In order to attend high school and receive a quality education, her family decided to move to Kazanlak. Sevda’s parents found jobs in the town so that they could provide the necessary support to their children.

Before high school, Sevda attended a small rural school next to Kazanlak where mostly Roma children were educated. At this school, Sevda completed her primary education. There, Sevda also received incredible support from a teacher who recognized the potential in her and began working with Sevda after school hours. The teacher then tells Sevda about the financial support that is provided by the Roma Education Fund.

The other human factor that positively influences Sevda’s professional development is a relative of hers who is also a nurse. With this example in her mind, Sevda decided to follow her big childhood dream – “to become a nurse with a white coat helping people in her small village”.
